From November 15th to March 2014, The Design Museum is offering us the chance to delve into the magnificent mind of a legendary fashion designer with a new exhibition titled Hello, My Name Is Paul Smith. Living in a world of creation, inspiration, collaboration, wit and beauty, Paul Smith has grown from humble beginnings into one of the world’s leading fashion brands – all while still maintaining a quintessentially British aesthetic.
Looking into the brand’s future as well as celebrating the past, the exhibition will reference Paul Smith’s influences and designs as well as drawing on the designers personal archive from the beginnings in Nottingham to the international prominence today. The exhibition promises to be a rich visual experience with collections chosen by Paul himself.
There will even be a recreation of the first Paul Smith shop – a very compact three meter by three meter space which opened in Nottingham in 1970. A version of the designers office has also been reproduced which is well known for being a treasure trove of curiosities and objects collected from his travels as well as artwork, stacks of books and magazines.
Despite the scale of the brands success, Paul Smith has managed to retain its personal touch and a quirky character to the collections. The exhibition will showcase both the design process but also aims to highlight Paul Smiths use of traditional craftsmanship and tailoring techniques.
